Stay tuned for more action
No more shilly-shallying....
Get on the blower, the fascimile, the twit-o-sphere and pick up a pen for climate action....
Make sure the Australian government knows that
1. Australian greenhouse pollution is still rising
According to data submitted to the UN climate convention, Australia's greenhouse pollution has increased by around 30% since 1990 -- and it is still rising. We have no legislation to bring it down, nearly three years after the election that brought the Labor Party to power promising urgent action on climate change. Australia must play its full part in the global response to climate change. We've just got to pull our finger out and start bringing our greenhouse pollution down if we want a hope of meeting global abatement needs.
2. There are up to a dozen new coal fired power stations in various stages of planning and approval around the country
The power generators we build in the next five years will be the ones that are supplying Australia’s electricity in 2020. In 2007, energy emissions were 142% of 1990 levels -- coal power is where most of our greenhouse pollution comes from, and we simply can't afford to keep increasing it.
3. We've got to phase out existing coal power -- starting with Hazelwood
Hazelwood is one of Australia's dirtiest coal-fired power stations, and its the perfect place to start in our transition to renewable energy. See here: http://www.climateactioncentre.org/replacehazelwood for more details.
